Abraham, Law, Works and Obedience

It is argued that Adam had a "covenant of works," then Abraham had a covenant of grace, then Moses brought another covenant of works, then the New Testament brought grace and faith.

The Bible shows that Abraham's covenant was one of "works," and that the law of Moses is written on the hearts of believers in the New Covenant.

Genesis 26:3-5 Dwell in this land, and I will be with you and bless you; for to you and your descendants I give all these lands, and I will perform the oath which I swore to Abraham your father. And I will make your descendants multiply as the stars of heaven; I will give to your descendants all these lands; and in your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed; because Abraham obeyed My voice and kept My charge, My commandments, My statutes, and My laws.”

Genesis 12:4
So Abram departed as the LORD had spoken to him, and Lot went with him. And Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran.

Genesis 17:23
So Abraham took Ishmael his son, all who were born in his house and all who were bought with his money, every male among the men of Abraham’s house, and circumcised the flesh of their foreskins that very same day, as God had said to him.

Genesis 18:17-19
And the LORD said, “Shall I hide from Abraham what I am doing, since Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him? For I have known him, in order that he may command his children and his household after him, that they keep the way of the LORD , to do righteousness and justice, so that the LORD may bring to Abraham what He has spoken to him.”

Genesis 22:10-20
10 And Abraham stretched out his hand and took the knife to slay his son.
11 But the Angel of the LORD called to him from heaven and said, “Abraham, Abraham!”
So he said, “Here I am.”
12 And He said, “Do not lay your hand on the lad, or do anything to him; for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from Me.”
13 Then Abraham lifted his eyes and looked, and there behind him was a ram caught in a thicket by its horns. So Abraham went and took the ram, and offered it up for a burnt offering instead of his son. 14 And Abraham called the name of the place, The-LORD-Will-Provide; as it is said to this day, “In the Mount of the LORD it shall be provided.”
15 Then the Angel of the LORD called to Abraham a second time out of heaven, 16 and said: “By Myself I have sworn, says the LORD, because you have done this thing, and have not withheld your son, your only son— 17 blessing I will bless you, and multiplying I will multiply your descendants as the stars of the heaven and as the sand which is on the seashore; and your descendants shall possess the gate of their enemies. 18 In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice.”

Psalm 112:1
Praise the LORD!
Blessed is the man who fears the LORD,
Who delights greatly in His commandments.
His descendants will be mighty on earth;
The generation of the upright will be blessed.

Matthew 5:19
Whoever therefore breaks one of the least of these commandments, and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

Matthew 7:24
“Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock:

1 Corinthians 15:58
Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.

Galatians 5:6
For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision avails anything, but faith working through love.

[Couldn't Abraham have said this? (1 Samuel 15:22)]

Hebrews 11:8
By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to the place which he would receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going. [faith = obedience]

James 2:21
Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered Isaac his son on the altar?

Hebrews 8:7
For if that first covenant had been faultless, then no place would have been sought for a second. 8 Because finding fault with them, He says:
“Behold, the days are coming, says the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah— 9 not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they did not continue in My covenant, and I disregarded them, says the LORD. 10 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the LORD: I will put My laws in their mind and write them on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. 11 None of them shall teach his neighbor, and none his brother, saying, ‘Know the LORD,’ for all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them. 12 For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.”
13 In that He says, “A new covenant, ” He has made the first obsolete. Now what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away.

Ezekiel 36:25 Then I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you shall be clean; I will cleanse you from all your filthiness and from all your idols. 26 I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. 27 I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will keep My judgments and do them. 28 Then you shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers; you shall be My people, and I will be your God.

Hebrews 10:15ff
But the Holy Spirit also witnesses to us; for after He had said before,
16 “This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, says the LORD: I will put My laws into their hearts, and in their minds I will write them,” 17 then He adds, “Their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.” 18 Now where there is remission of these, there is no longer an offering for sin.
24
And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, 25 not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching. 26 For if we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, 27 but a certain fearful expectation of judgment, and fiery indignation which will devour the adversaries. 28 Anyone who has rejected Moses’ law dies without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. 29 Of how much worse punishment, do you suppose, will he be thought worthy who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, counted the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified a common thing, and insulted the Spirit of grace? 30 For we know Him who said, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord. And again, “The LORD will judge His people.” 31 It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

Genesis 3:8
And they heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden as the Spirit of The Day, and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden.
9 Then the LORD God called to Adam and said to him, “Where are you?”
10 So he said, “I heard Your voice in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; and I hid myself.”

While there are many phenomena associated with the [Glory-]Cloud (most are listed in Ps. 18:6-15), perhaps the most striking characteristic is the peculiar, unmistakable noise or voice: virtually every account mentions it. Depending on the situation, it can sound like wind, thunder, rushing water, a shout, a trumpet (or many trumpets), a marching army, the rumbling of chariot wheels across the heavens, or the fluttering and beating of wings (see the passages already cited; also Ezek. 3:12-13; 10:1-5; 2nd Sam. 5:24; 2nd Kings 7:5-7); and Ezekiel tells us that the sound, in fact, has its origin in the beating of the wings of the myriads of angels (Ezek. 1:24; 3:12-13). Consider the following description of the sevenfold Voice from the Cloud:

The Voice of the LORD is upon the waters;
The God of glory thunders,
The LORD is over many waters.
The Voice of the LORD is powerful,
The Voice of the LORD is majestic.
The Voice of the LORD breaks the cedars;
Yes, the LORD breaks in pieces the cedars of Lebanon.
And He makes Lebanon skip like a calf,
And Sirion like a young wild ox.
The Voice of the LORD hews out flames of fire.
The Voice of the LORD shakes the wilderness;
The LORD shakes the wilderness of Kadesh [cf. Num. 16:19-33].
The Voice of the LORD makes the deer to calve,
And strips the forests bare.
And in His Temple everything says, "Glory!" (Ps. 29:3-9)

It was this Voice—an ear-splitting, earth-shattering roar that Adam and Eve heard on their last day in the Garden: "And they heard the Voice of the LORD God traversing the Garden…and they hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the Garden"

When Adam and Eve sinned, they heard the characteristic sound of the Glory-Cloud blasting its way like an express train through the Garden: the thundering Voice of the Lord caused by the beating of angels' wings. The literal translation of that verse reads:

And they heard the Voice of the LORD God traversing the Garden as the Spirit of the Day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the Garden" (Gen. 3:8).

In other words, Adam and Eve heard the sound the Cloud makes when God comes as "the Spirit of the Day," when He comes as He did at the Beginning, as Judgment. God did not take evening strolls through the Garden, contrary to the sentimental reflections of third-rate evangelical poets. When Judgment came to Adam and Eve, it came in the form of the Glory-Cloud: with blinding light, scorching heat, and deafening noise—the Spirit of the Day.

David Chilton, Paradise Restored, Chapter 7, Chapter 15.

Conclusion

If Adam had a "covenant of works" with God, so did Abraham, so did Israel in Ezekiel's Day, and Ezekiel foretold a gracious new covenant of law and works with a fearful God, more fearful than under the Old Covenant.

From the Epilogue:

If the premillenarians espouse an interpretation of Scripture that expects a literal, precise fulfillment of prophecy, then one may expect precise, accurate definitions of the fulfillment of those prophecies, or lacking such precision, one may expect an admission of indefiniteness which would at least have the advantage of avoiding false identifications and gross error. The premillenarians’ history, however, is strewn with a mass of erroneous speculations which have undermined their credibility. Sometimes false identifications have been made dogmatically, at other times only as probabilities or possibilities, but the net result has always been the same—an increased skepticism toward pre- millennialism.

Those persons confronted with premillenarians’ presentations need to be conscious of the composite past of prophetic interpretation which has included the following phenomena.
  • The current crisis was always identified as a sign of the end, whether it was the Russo-Japanese War, the First World War, the Second World War, the Palestine War, the Suez Crisis, the June War, or the Yom Kippur War.
  • The revival of the Roman Empire has been identified variously as Mussolini’s empire, the League of Nations, the United Nations, the European Defense Community, the Common Market, and NATO.
  • Speculation on the Antichrist has included Napoleon, Mussolini, Hitler, and Henry Kissinger.
  • The northern confederation was supposedly formed by the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk, the Rapallo Treaty, the Nazi-Soviet Pact, and then the Soviet B1oc.
  • The “kings of the east” have been variously the Turks, the lost tribes of Israel, Japan, India, and China.
  • The supposed restoration of Israel has confused the problem of whether the Jews are to be restored before or after the coming of the Messiah.
  • The restoration of the latter rain has been pinpointed to have begun in 1897, 1917, and 1948.
  • The end of the “times of the Gentiles” has been placed in 1895, 1917, 1948, and 1967.
  • “Gog” has been an impending threat since the Crimean War, both under the Czars and the Communists.

Such loose liberalism when considered as a whole is no more precise than the figurative interpretations of which these literalists are so critical. The breadth of interpretations might even be compared to the obscure, Platonic, allegorical interpretations of the early Greek church fathers.

The Human Armageddon

Interestingly, most Christians are a lot like evolutionists.

  • Evolutionists believe that there are billions of years of evolutionary history behind us, but the recent appearance of human beings is like a cancer that will lead to an ecological armageddon. We are in the end times. We need to exterminate a few billion human beings.
  • Many Christians believe the earth is much younger, but they still believe we are in the end times, and they look forward to armageddon, and the slaughter of a few billion human beings

For the views of environmentalists on the dangers presented by human beings, see George Reisman's very important article, The Toxicity of Environmentalism.

Secular Humanists have deliberately killed an average of 10,000 or more people per day during the 20th century. Nearly half a billion people have been murdered by non-Christian governments in this century. This number does not count the number of people who aren't allowed to see their first birthday. In America 4,000 pre-born people are killed every day, with possibly double that number in China and the "former" Soviet Union — each. Adding these murders, and the total approaches 10,000 murders per hour.

But because American Christians believe evil is predestined and inescapable in these "end times," they are so "heavenly-minded they are of no earthly good," Secular Humanists have decided to up the ante. They now are discussing possibilities for eliminating an additional fifteen thousand people per hour.

Here are the details from The New American magazine :

Cousteau the "Humanitarian"

Item: In its front-page article on the passing of famed French oceanographer Jacques Cousteau, the June 26th [1997] New York Times stated that the "outspoken Mr. Cousteau was often at odds with other leaders of the environment movement. He not only lent a sympathetic ear to technological fixes for pollution problems, but he also refused to put the interests of animals above those of people. 'I'm not an ecologist for the animals,' he often said, 'I'm an ecologist for the people.'"

Correction: Cousteau put the interests of people so high that he concluded many needed to be eliminated so that others could survive. In an interview appearing in the November 1991 UNESCO Courier, Cousteau bared his humanitarianism and his anxiety toward certain "technological fixes":

Our society is turning toward more and more needless consumption. It is a vicious circle that I compare to cancer . . . . Should we eliminate suffering, diseases? The idea is beautiful, but perhaps not a benefit for the long term. We should not allow our dread of diseases to endanger the future of our species.
This is a terrible thing to say. In order to stabilize world population, we must eliminate 350,000 people per day. It is a horrible thing to say, but it is just as bad not to say it. [Emphasis added.]

Cousteau, you see, viewed overpopulation as the greatest problem facing humanity. But even the fates of those fortunate enough to continue living on our crowded planet would be shaped by coercive utopians like Cousteau. In the 1980s, in order to prevent nuclear war, Cousteau proposed "the compulsory exchange of children at a relatively low age, 7 to 8 or 8 to 9" to live for one year in the enemy country. "I don't see how a nation could press the button . . . when they know that 3 million of their children are over there. I mean, the mothers would not tolerate that," he reasoned to the June 13, 1985 Los Angeles Times. What could be more humanitarian than that?

Democide:

The Secular State is the Killer State.

Evolution and Secularism mean genocide

Another human hater: Finland's Pentti Linkola
"By sacrificing perhaps billions [we] might possibly save a million," he remarks.
As one who believes another world war would be a "happy occasion for the planet," Linkola likens the current global situation to a sinking ship with only one remaining lifeboat. "Those who hate life will try to load it with more people and sink the lot." while "those who love and respect life will take the ship’s ax and sever the extra hands that cling to the sides of the boat," he declares.
To chop the metaphorical hands from the gunwales, this outspoken opponent of Amnesty International and the Vatican advises an end to third-world aid, the introduction of mandatory abortions, and the creation of a totalitarian state with strict environmental laws enforced by a ruthless "green police."

The Voluntary Human Extinction Movement
"May we live long and die out," is the rallying cry for this Oregon-based environmental faction dedicated to bringing the human experiment to an abrupt halt. However, unlike Linkola, these "deep" ecologists suggest non-coercive means to eliminate our toxic presence from
the planet.

Abortion

According to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), 50 million abortions are performed around the world every year. That's an average of 136,986.3 abortions every single day. That's 5707.7 pre-born children killed per hour, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Counting the Costs

Jesus said to count the costs.

How much does this Bible Study program cost?

First, what is the cost of your being a pawn in the New World Order? What is the cost of waiting around for Christ's Second Coming -- like too many Christians have done for centuries -- instead of taking risks like America's Founding Fathers to preserve the blessings of liberty for ourselves and our posterity.

Second, what is the value of your time? We're asking you to substitute this daily study program for 1 hour of the mainstream media each day:
  • 1 hour of "American Idol," or
  • a half-hour of the CBS Evening News and a half-hour reading the sports section of your favorite newspaper, or
  • 2 half-hour sit-coms, or
  • 1 hour of escapist fiction, romance novels, or
  • 1 hour of computer games, off- or online, or
  • 1 hour of Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, or other "drive time" radio as you commute to work (Those enrolled in the Full Coaching Program have access to MP3 downloads of this home-study program to burn to CD so you can listen in the car while you drive to and from work), or
  • any combination of 1 hour's worth of the mainstream media each and every day. Cut it out.
Are you willing to make that "sacrifice?"

Third, what is your time worth? If you wrap up burgers at McDonald's, your time is worth less than $9/hour. That means the total cost of this program is $3,285: that's how much you can make at McDonald's instead of studying the five most important works in the history of Western Civilization and completely transforming your understanding of the Bible and gaining a Biblical Worldview. If you're a lawyer who bills your clients at $250/hr., this program will cost you $91,250.

If you're mistaken, and God has not predestined the world to get worse and worse until Armegeddon destroys millions of people before the Second Coming ends everything, and the truth is that God wants you to change the world and start ripples through history that will last for generations, is $100,000 better than the approval of your Lord?

"Well done, thou good and faithful servant!"

Isn't this what you want Jesus to say to you?

How much is that worth to you?

Studies show that this program will be more effective if you're invested in the program; if you have a little skin in the game; something that will motivate you to persevere in this study.

We suggest you go down to the bottom of the page and sign up for our home study course. You'll receive 356 lessons, one each day for the next year. We suggest you pay us $95 for this program, or $9.50 per month. That way you won't just let the lessons accumulate in your email box. If you're homeless and using a computer in the public library, or if your money was taken from you by President Bush and given to Wall Street Executives, we'll ask our donors to create a scholarship for you. Nobody will be turned away for lack of money.

How did we come up with $95 as a number?

Jesus says "the laborer is worthy of his hire," and you'll agree that those who labored on our New 95 Theses are worth one dollar per thesis.

If you had to hire someone to read you the five most important works in the history of Western Civilization, you would surely pay them minium wage. That would be more than $2,000 for the recordings.

$9.50 per month, or $95 for the full year.

A money-back guarantee.

It isn't the money that's holding you back.

It's the fear of finding out that you've been wrong for years.

It's the fear of learning that God has bigger responsibilities for you.

It's the fear that you're not going to be able to wait around for Jesus to hand you your completed duties on a silver platter.

Turn these fears into opportunities.

Put your email address into the box at the bottom of this page, and you won't receive a bill for 30 days. By then you'll be convinced that this daily habit is what you should be doing for the next 365 days.

After that, a new life will be waiting for you.

A Closer Examination of 2 Peter 3:9.

Jesus Came, The Apostles Judged

Jesus says He will be "Coming on His Throne" before "this generation" dies out. Did that generation witness His coming? Did the Apostles, by their faithfulness, act as judges against that sinful generation?

The Bible said it would happen, so it must have happened.

"The Elements" in 2 Peter 3

A study of "the elements" in 2 Peter 3. Does the Bible predict the "melting" of the planet, or the obliteration of this terrestrial ball in a nuclear armageddon? Is that really what the Bible is saying? Some say so.
